Mom Warns About The Horrific Danger Of Putting Two Cribs Side-By-Side

When prepping for a baby, there are a million things new parents have to worry about. Baby proofing the house, setting up the nursery, making sure you’re stocked up with all of the essentials a newborn may need…the list goes on and on. But one thing that may fall by the wayside is the placement of the crib. It doesn’t really seem like that big of a deal, but for parents with twins or young children very close in age, it can mean the difference between life or death.

Mother Alison Johnson knows this reality better than anyone. She has 2 18-month-old twins, Caleb and Libby. Alison set up her children’s cribs right beside each other, so they could be close to one another when they slept. Little did she know what would happen because of this choice.

One afternoon Alison put Caleb down for a nap. She went into another room, but started to hear him cry. When she went to check on him, she couldn’t believe her eyes. “He had climbed out of his crib and was stuck between his crib and Libby’s crib. His body fit through, but his head wouldn’t. He was using every ounce of energy he had to hold himself up by his little arms. If they had given out, he would’ve just been hanging there by his head.”

In Caleb’s attempt to climb from his crib into his sister’s, he had become stuck between the two and was left there hanging! Who knows what could have happened if Alison hadn’t been able to run in and check on him right away. Alison was shaken, and aware of this possibility as well. “I generally use nap time as an opportunity to shower. Had I done that today and checked on him after five minutes, he would have literally hung himself.”

After such a scare, the mom posted a photo of her twins’ cribs with a warning to all parents, so that they wouldn’t have to experience something so terrifying. “Please consider sharing this post in case someone you know may have a similar set up. It’s incredibly heartbreaking to think of what the outcome could have been today. I’m still totally shook up over it and don’t think the vision of him stuck there will ever leave my head.”

I have a lot of friends that have twins or kids close in age that may have a similar set up, so I wanted to share something VERY scary that happened today. This morning I put Caleb down for his nap. Shortly after he started to cry. After a few minutes, I went in to check on him. He had climbed out of his crib and was stuck between his crib and Libby’s crib. His body fit through, but his head wouldn’t. He was using every ounce of energy he had to hold himself up by his little arms. If they had given out, he would’ve just been hanging there by his head.

What’s even more scary is that like many moms, I generally use nap time as an opportunity to shower. Had I done that today and checked on him after five minutes, he would have literally hung himself. When baby proofing, I never in a million years would have seen this as a potential danger. Please consider sharing this post in case someone you know may have a similar set up. It’s incredibly heartbreaking to think of what the outcome could have been today. I’m still totally shook up over it and don’t think the vision of him stuck there will ever leave my head.

Alison even says that during her whole baby proofing process, she never would have expected her crib placement to be something dangerous. This is an important reminder for all parents, but especially parents of twins or multiple babies who share a nursery. Thankfully Alison was there to help little Caleb, but it came at a cost. Hopefully her story will help other parents think twice about the way they set up their cribs, so they don’t have to go through what Alison and Caleb did.
